Your Customers Are Googling You: What a Good Online Reputation Looks Like in 2026

Consider your last experience picking a new restaurant, hiring a plumber, or selecting a dentist. Most people do what is called an online search first, and a good online reputation is often what decides who they pick. You may have only perused a couple of reviews. You probably quickly assessed star ratings and moved on in less than ten seconds.

This is the same process your customers do when checking you out online.

For this reason, an excellent online reputation is not a ‘nice to have.’ Customers search you out online before they come to your location or make a purchase. Based on the BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 97% of consumers search for and read reviews for local businesses. The search is on!

This means you need an online reputation that resonates and inspires trust for your customers. An excellent reputation does not mean a perfect reputation. A perfect reputation for customers seems fake and unbelievable. It is necessary, however, to have an active and positive presence that reassures customers your business is alive and thriving. For example, having a positive average star rating and recently updated reviews positively influence a customer’s decision.

Now that you know the elements of an excellent online reputation and what influences customers positively, you can create a work plan to effectively build your online reputation.

What Does a Good Online Reputation Actually Mean?

A good online reputation is what people see and how they feel when they look you up. It is your star ratings. It is the overall sentiment in your reviews. It is the results that Google displays on the first page when your name is searched. It is your web pages, social media accounts, news articles, and forum posts.

It’s commonplace to aim for a perfect reputation, when in fact you should aim for an excellent reputation. A perfect online reputation would translate to all five-star reviews, or 100% approval ratings. In reality, perfect online reputation means being involved in the community you are a part of. You are alive and active. You have fresh reviews and a good average rating. There are human interactions and reviews to explain and discuss solutions to issues.

“Sure, reviews are important. But how much?” They are a lot more important than you think.

In early 2026, BrightLocal surveyed 1,058 Americans, and the results were telling. As PinMeTo’s analysis of the survey mentions, 85% of people say they are more likely to use a business with positive reviews and 77% say they are less likely to use a business with negative reviews.

The threshold for acceptable star-ratings is also rising. In 2025, only 17% of participants said they would only use businesses which score a minimum of 4.5 stars. In 2026, that figure was 31%. Additionally, 41% of respondents say they always check reviews before using a business, compared to 29% in 2025.

This is more than just peoples’ preferences. It’s more than just feeling good or feeling bad about a restaurant. It can make a huge impact on business. A study done by Michael Luca, a professor at Harvard Business School, found that one additional star on Yelp reviews can lead to an increase of 5% to 9% in revenue for independent restaurants. For a small business, that one star review can significantly help or hurt the business.

It’s also not only Google and Yelp anymore. As the 2026 BrightLocal data shows, the average consumer checks out 6 different review sites. In addition to that, people are also using video and AI-based search engines for recommendations.

How to Build a Good Online Reputation

The good news? You don’t need a huge budget to get this right. You need consistency. Here’s where to start.

1. Google yourself (seriously)

Search for your business in a private window. Then, search for yourself if you’re the business owner. Look for your business in the first two pages. What do strangers see? Look for your starting point there.

2. Claim and clean up your profiles

Remember to claim and verify your Google Business Profile, Facebook page, Yelp listing, and any other professional websites. The name, address, and phone number should be consistent across all the platforms. This might sound tedious, but inconsistent information is confusing for everyone involved.

3. Ask for reviews, and keep asking

Most happy customers won’t leave a review unless you ask. So ask! A quick text or email after a job well done works wonders. Timing matters here, because 74% of consumers look for reviews written in the last three months. A pile of great reviews from 2022 won’t carry you anymore.

One important note. Never buy reviews, write fake ones, or offer a reward only for positive feedback. The FTC’s rule on fake reviews bans these practices and lets the agency seek civil penalties against businesses that break it. It’s not worth the risk.

4. Reply to every review

Yes, every single one. The good, the bad, and even the mediocre reviews. If you receive a negative review, contact TheBestReputation first to see if it can be removed. If removal isn’t possible, respond professionally and thoughtfully. Research shows that 80% of customers are more willing to work with businesses that respond to reviews, but avoid copying and pasting the same response. Personalize your replies by using the customer’s name and addressing something specific to their experience.

5. Show up where your customers are

Post consistently on the social media networks that your target audience uses. Post pictures from behind the scenes, successes of your team, and useful tips. This will make your fresh content rise above negative content.

What to Do When You Get a Bad Review

It is inevitable. The most successful companies sometimes receive a one-star review. On some occasions, this review can be warranted. In others, however, it simply isn’t.

First, step back for a minute. Do not respond in your anger. Give yourself at least an hour to cool off, if needed.

Respond publicly, rationally, and succinctly. Express gratitude for their comment. Apologize for their experience without getting into specifics. Provide an offer to set things right privately via email or phone. Other potential customers reading this response will remember your reaction, and a good response is always worth more than the bad review itself.

If a review is fake, abusive, or breaks the platform’s rules, flag it for removal. Just don’t try to bury real criticism. Under the FTC rule, suppressing honest negative reviews can land you in trouble too.

How do you permanently solve the problem? Regular reviews of the site will do it. When one customer is dissatisfied, fifty satisfied customers are more impressive.

The Bottom Line

A positive reputation online is not achieved by chance. It is earned through one review, one response, and one positive interaction with a customer at a time. The companies who succeed are not the companies with perfect scores. They are the ones who respond, listen, and communicate.
